Back into djing but its a complete different world now (stream your dj set)

Last blogpost was in febuary, so now when back into djing again the world is completely different due to the coronavirus. Hardly noone goes to clubs dancing anymore. But for you whos still working on your djing there is streaming and podcasting.

Live streaming
podcasts
facebook/instagram live
and promotion

But before I start I would like to say I hope you are well. Also lets give thougts to the people whos working at hospitals and helping peolple during this pandemia.

Live streaming on facebook or youtube and broadcasting your dj set. You'll need

camera
tripod
lights
your dj equiptment
computer
internet connection

The camera needs support for livestremaing, A gopro, a dslr or camera with a good quality sensor that works for streaming indoors.
A tripod is good but if you dont have one then a bookshelf can work instead.
then lights... there are lights specially for filming, but theese are expensive. There are special light bulbs for photography that you can use with standard lampfoots. But ask at a photostore if they have lights compatible with standard lampfoots.
Then its best to have a steady internet connection. Perhaps exchange your wifi dongle with a cat5 network cable, for an steady connection as possible. Then ofcourse a PC/mac to stream from.
Softwares such as OBS (obsproject.com/
From OBS you need to configure so the stream links to your facebook page.
Your computer needs to run both your dj software, Serato and obs streaming your video live to facebook. So have in mind to do so from a computer that can run these simultaniously.

Podcast

Podcast is a lighter type of task for a dj. You simply publish your finished set when it ready. You dont need to dj everything in one go. Most DVS has a built in recorder so you can record your set without any other software. Traktor for example, has the option of running a external microphone to overdub the dj set wile mixing. This is where you podcast. Use your voice to transition from one song to the next. Or just mix, and overdub your voice at a part of the song where there is a break. Or you can start the pod by talking, then mix your set and then finish the pod with a mic overdub.

you can use bandcamp pro to post podcast on your artist page.
If you like to make an exclusive show you can private stream your dj-set.

Or then there are hundreds if not thousands of platforms to publish your mix on
such as anchor.fm/buzzsprout.com/ and more free platforms

Promotion.

I would suggest streaming more and promote less. Noone likes promotion if its more than the actual stream or song youve published. Try to have in mind that there are difficult times for everyone. So the clubscene is on pause right now. But hang in there, people will start watching your stream, but from the start you can ask a friend to listen or watch your stream. The better your dj skills the greater the audience...

Go for it! Best of luck!

Odd records - worth collecting?

Some records are intresting for a collector because of their uniqueness. There are still alot of cratediggers out there, seeing how many recordshops with 2nd hand records there are. I used to dig in the crates for records for about 20 years. Read my article on restarting  my record collection made me a better dj. Found a box full of records that I forgot about there were sitting in storage. These were odd records, Lp's that Ive collected beacause they had vocals and effects on them. Because of their uniqueness Lets look closer: Sci-Fi - soundeffects . A record filled with EFX blips and space-ish sounds. Released on BBC records in 1981. Not your avarage synthrecord, but for the scifi nerd. It says on the back that its intended for radio and tv use. Could perhaps be for use for a dj so the level of  uniqueness is 4/5. The age of television . This is something more listenable. It contains narration of the story of television. And recordings of historic tv broadcast such as the m...

The Roland tr909

The Roland tr909. The classic drumcomputer that gave housemusic its sound. The distinct kick, cymbals and snares are heard on the majority of records in housemusic. From classic, to the latest future house releases. The tr909. A updated version of the tr808 analog drummer from 81. But this had a hybrid soundengine that also featured samples in the cymbalsection. They weren't soldout in the stores, instead they were often found below their standard price elsewhere. Dj's and producers started buying them for cheap, and with more records it was heard on the more popular it became. Electronic drumcomputers were common in the 80's, almost every genre had synthetic drums. The 808 was marketed as the future drummachine, the computer controlled sequencer with analog sound synthesis. So when the 909 came along the musicians quickly adopted it in their future sound palette. Its accent function boosts certain sounds in the steps from the sequencer wile the unaccented steps rema...

DJ Rasoul 1998 (Large)

DJ Rasoul 1998 (Large) Super record from the later end of the 90's. This EP has 3 songs, Let the music, Slingshot and Francisco Nights. Side A with "Let the music" has a dark bassline and acoustic piano, togheter with strings and the classic house rythm. Dub echos and analogue synth sounds. The song isnt just a 4-bar loop. It has lots of variations. In the middle of the song a soul vocal is heard. Also percussive elements. The later end of the song seams happier,  like the minor chords are swapped with major scale instead. What I dont like about this song is the tb303 "like"-sounds towards the end. It gives the impression of a comedy sound. On side B on "Slingshot" the quality is high on the production. With groovy basslines and arpeggio-like elements. The rythm is more disco on this song. 1/3-into the song the loopy groove evolves with a acoustic piano. Then 2/3- the song goes back to the loopy status again. I like this song, its groovy and has catchy...
