Recording on a cassette portastudio step by step and honest opinion from a owner in 2021 / 2022.

Cassettes are fun, the sound is different from what we're used to. The limitations makes the musician more creative. This is what I thought  when I started  recording a song on my old 4 channel porta studio again. After waiting for a new cassette tape to arrive. So my idea was to record an old school hip hop song on to tape, but then its limitation kept getting bigger & bigger. Until complete it was n't fun anymore. Ok lets start from the top: I made a beat in my sampler that I wanted to record to track one, vocals on track two and overdubs on three and last chorus on channel 4. The vocals vary alot so recording each verse/chorus on its dedicated channel is a good thing to do. Otherwise 1 channel get cluttered up with different recordings and you have to manually set the gain when playback to control the volumes. channel 1 Already when connecting the sampler to the porta the limitations were present. channels on the porta are in mono and output from the  sampler is in stere

Kerry Chandler - Heal my heart feat Diva 12"

Today we're looking at a 12" single from Kerry Chandler and Diva with the song Heal my heart. The vocals are in style of soul over classic house music. This particular single is also appealing as pop since the special dynamic of the singer voice. It isn't a 1-take recording but a well mixed and a clear chorus sung by the singer on multiple recording channels. Kerry Chandler is known for his soul inspired productions. Perhaps one of the greatest in that genre. As a single the 12" has 4 tracks. 3 versions of the heal my heart and one drum dub that has the same drum beat but different melodies than the main song. The single is released in 1999. The sound is timeless and the quality of the music is high. It is commercially appealing since of the smooth and polished vocal production. I do recommend picking up this single if you see it in the record shop. Kerry Chandlers productions are great and there are lots of different releases from him around to explore. Highly reco

Toothpick trick?

Does the tooth pick trick work when a record is scratched and the records skips? One of my favorite records started skipping. The Disco elements vol 2, on a track called progresso disco time, just after the intro. So how could I fix it from skipping? On Youtube there are a quite a few tutorials on how to repair a record if the vinyl gets scratched. The needle jumps out of its position and continues into a wrong place of the song. I found a tutorial called the toothpick trick and how you can re groove a vinyl with a toothpick by gently rubbing it along the groove. But in the same direction as the groove moves. The toothpick didn't do the trick. I had difficulties finding the right scratch since there were more scratches on the record (most are just superficial and didn't affect the playback). When replaying the song I guess it re grooved the record just by playing the record many times. The record probably had lots of dust and made the record skip because of that. Next time a re

Odd records - worth collecting?

Some records are intresting for a collector because of their uniqueness. There are still alot of cratediggers out there, seeing how many recordshops with 2nd hand records there are. I used to dig in the crates for records for about 20 years. Read my article on restarting  my record collection made me a better dj. Found a box full of records that I forgot about there were sitting in storage. These were odd records, Lp's that Ive collected beacause they had vocals and effects on them. Because of their uniqueness Lets look closer: Sci-Fi - soundeffects . A record filled with EFX blips and space-ish sounds. Released on BBC records in 1981. Not your avarage synthrecord, but for the scifi nerd. It says on the back that its intended for radio and tv use. Could perhaps be for use for a dj so the level of  uniqueness is 4/5. The age of television . This is something more listenable. It contains narration of the story of television. And recordings of historic tv broadcast such as the moonla

Rick Wade Harmonie Park Revisited 2 12" Ep on vinyl

Picked up the EP, Rick Wade Harmonie Park Revisited 2. 4 tracks of detroit house. Featuring songs."Harsh thoughts" "Fade Away", "Prime Time" and "Forgotten Track".  It doesnt say from what year its from. This made me wondering if it were a  90's LP since of the classic sound of the record. But from looking on discogs  I found from what year, 2008. Definitly a classic sounding record. And since of the name revisited, The tracks are re-released tracks on the the label Harmonie Park records. The arrangement is minimalistic, Square waveform basses and steady drumrhythms. All in all a good spectra of sound to fill a dancefloor. My favorite track is Fade Away. If this is the second part, I want to hear the first part aswell. So up on the wishlist.  hear more of the artist

Cleaning your vinyl, how to

Recently when I finished recording a mixtape, all the records were completely covered in grease from fingers and dust. The records didnt sound perticulary good anymore, the cracles from the dust seemed to have taken over and were as high in volume as the music. I didnt have any special cleaning at home. So I first tried to just wipe off the grease with a cleaningcloth. This perhaps made the vinyl look clean, but most of the dust were still in the grooves. So I started to use a  moistered cloth and when that didnt do, I eventually progressed to clean the records with water. First with soap, but that didnt do much of a difference. So insteasd just water. This had some drawbacks however. The paperlabel on the records are made out of paper so when pooring water over the label can ruin it. Mine didnt get so much water on the label so I manage to dry it and the water stains isnt visable. Then its important to not poor to hot water over the record, because it can warp the record. Try using lu
